Many parents wonder how young children can grasp big mathematical concepts or independent reading without rote drilling or monthly tests. The secret lies in the Concrete-to-Abstract progression at the heart of our Montessori Lab.
In our curriculum, a child is always introduced first to a concrete, physical material that embodies an abstract idea — such as Golden Bead sets for decimal place value or tactile Sandpaper Letters for phonetic sounds. With 20 months of exposure to the Aarlo Montessori curriculum (by around 4 years of age), children not only identify numbers but can break them into their place value: Units, Tens, Hundreds, and Thousands.
Similarly, in language development, teachers use the proven Three-Period Name Lesson (1. Naming/Introduction, 2. Recognition/Association, and 3. Recall) alongside our Moveable Alphabet. By age 4, children phonetically decode and read 3-letter and 4-letter words independently, supported by daily rhymes and storytelling.
Every Montessori Lab activity includes a built-in Control of Error that gives instant feedback to the child, protecting self-esteem and intrinsic motivation. Rather than conducting stressful monthly exams, our teachers observe each child daily and log their developmental milestones in our parent app.
