ntttttWriting is an expression of what a child already knows. By working first with concrete Montessori sensorial materials (knobbed insets, colour tablets, and sandpaper letters), children strengthen their 3-finger pincer grip and begin writing letters and numbers naturally around 3 to 4 years of age.ntttt

A common question parents ask during campus tours is: “When will my child start writing, and why do you introduce materials before worksheets?” In early childhood development, forcing a 2.5-year-old to hold a pencil before their hand muscles are ready causes frustration.
Writing requires two things: conceptual understanding in the brain and fine-motor dexterity in the small muscles of the fingers and wrist. In our Montessori Lab, children first grasp knobbed cylinder blocks, red circle insets, and colour grading tablets using their thumb, index, and middle fingers — the exact three-finger pincer grip needed to hold a pencil.
Next, they trace textured Sandpaper Letters and numerals, building muscle memory of each letter’s shape while associating it with its phonetic sound. Finally, our aligned curriculum workbooks reinforce the exact concepts they have already mastered with the materials — resulting in joyful, confident writing between ages 3 and 4.
